WordPress Crashes Firefox, Google Gears is the Culprit

After Firefox 3.0.10 repeatedly crashed on us every time we uploaded a photo in WordPress 2.7.1, we had to find out why this was happening and find the fix for it. After scouring the net keying “wordpress crashes firefox” as keywords, we found the culprit. It is the Google Gears add-on that is causing the crash when you upload a picture.

The fix is simple. Disable Google Gears in your add-ons. You can find it under tools, just click add-ons and look for Google Gears, then click disable. Firefox would require you to restart your browser so be sure you have no unsaved projects in your open windows. Hit restart, try uploading a photo in your WP-admin post, voila! Look we even have uploaded photos on this post which we couldn’t do minutes ago as proof!

We don’t recommend uninstalling Google Gears because we know the experts are working and looking into it and this will all soon be fixed. Why go through uninstalling only to reinstall later? Disabling works so it’s the easier solution for now.

Perhaps it is related to the latest release of Gears 0.5.21.0 announced at the Google Gears blog on May 28th that is causing the issue? Firefox or WordPress would have to update itself to be compatible with the new version of Gears. We don’t know yet but for now we are disabling Google Gears in our Firefox add-ons. Try it and let us know if it works for you or if you found other issues related to the Firefox crash using WordPress.

      Hi there,
I’m using Gears 0.5.30.0 on wordpress without an issue on Firefox 3.5.2 . I am also using one of the nightly builds with Gears without an issue for wordpress as well as Google Chrome without an issue. Both on windoze as well as GNU/Linux (Ubuntu) platforms.

Hello shirish, thanks for the update. this post have been created in May when the problem was first discovered. We haven’t re-activated yet since but good to know it is now working again. We’ll most likely activate Gears again on our machines.
