Illegal internet content law
Ever since the Internet became available to the broad public, content has been offered and exchanged that has been illegal or forbidden. Most of the times, when faced with the illegal content on the internet expression, people think of music and movies, but the more contraband issues are much more sinister.
In the early days, some newsgroups and bulletin boards were hoarding anarchistic pamphlets that were meant to destabilize mainly the USA, like how to create a pipe bomb, the famous fertilizer bomb, like the one used in the Oklahoma City Bombing. In the latter years even worse stuff has been uploaded, most prominently the recipe how to create anthrax, or how to create toxic gases from common household items. The small stuff I haven’t mentioned yet, but from lock picking to ATM fraud made easy, for an enthusiast interested in a criminal career, plenty of advice is available.
Not all illegal content on the Internet is that extreme, law provisions are quite strict, so it may happen that a seemingly benign video recording of your loved ones that you posted on YouTube may infringe on other people’s copyrights or trademarks. For instance, if you taped your private moment in front of a restaurant or fast food place, then the business may object to your video being broadcast publicly and request it to be taken down.
But to return to the ominous side of the Net, for a while so called “snuff movies” were very popular, although highly illegal. Such movies portray killing of humans and some sick elements decided that it is “in” to watch such deranged content. Swift action by the law enforcement agencies of multiple countries seems to have eradicated the trend.
Other illegal content is considered to be secretly taping people and posting that on the Internet; mostly the cases involve sexual content. In one much publicized event, Rock ‘n Roll music legend, Chuck Berry, got arrested taping women in the bathroom of his club. Some of the footage ended on the Net. Nowadays, with all these camera phones with very decent resolution around, much more illegal video content is hitting the Web, people seem to have lost the sense to common decency and violate almost anyone’s privacy. Currently the 3gp format is the most popular one for such illegal material, a resurgence of more violent and more disturbing footage is imminent.
But such illegal content makes us wish that bootleg copies of movies and music were all there is and we do not understand all the fuss about it, knowing what else is being offered.
