Nyan Cat Celebrates One Year Anniversary

Posted April 14th, 2012 by admin No Comments »

One year and 70 million views later, the Nyan Cat celebrates it’s YouTube birthday today. The backstory is easy enough to explain: animated gif plus Japanese pop tune equals weird looped animation. What happened after is anything but.

Defying the logic of many, the clip went on to become one of YouTube’s top 10 most-viewed videos of 2011 and spawned seemingly countless parodies, remixes, and covers. There is a 100 hour version now. With 6 million views.

Interestingly, while the video did see an initial spike in interest in April of 2011, it was not as large as some of the other well known viral hits. Instead, a look at the data shows that the clip has maintained a fairly steady following, averaging around 1 million views per week over the past year.

In the neighborhood of 100,000 videos have been posted with “nyan” in the title over the past year. And those videos have been seen over 400 million times. 400 million. Nearly half a billion.

Here are the top 10 most popular:

Conan O’Brien ousts Pete Cashmore at Mashable for $3500

Conan O'Brien Mashable

Talk show host Conan O’Brien posted a viral video and accompanied it with a blog post on Mashable declaring that he had bought out Pete Cashmore for $3500. The spoof did what it was supposed to do; it took a pair of popular social media and pop icons and combined them for some pre-April Fool’s Day fun.

Still, it would be nice to see O’Brien get more involved in tech. He should going deeper into a tech world that the real-life genius pretends he’s not a part of (despite having a degree from Harvard). He ends the video by saying “stay tuned”.

Google to allow people to change their weather on April 1

Posted April 1st, 2012 by admin No Comments »

Google Weather

Another sighting of Google’s yearly April Fool’s Day jokes is live. If you search for “weather” you will have the standard forecast available, but you’ll have the new option of using the “Google Weather Control” interface to make changes if you’d like. You’ll see in the image above I set it to snow in Beverly Hills on Sunday.

Once you make your changes, Google prompts you with this warning: “Please notice, after submitting it takes approximately 45 minutes until your weather changes take effect. Note: exercise caution when setting extremes.”

Understanding relativity in 4 minutes or less

Posted April 1st, 2012 by admin No Comments »

Relativity

For over a century, people have tried to cope with understanding Einstein’s special theory of relativity and his famous equation, E=MC2. There have been long videos and visualizations that attempted to dumb down both the process that Einstein used to come up with the theories and the way that our minds can wrap themselves around them.

Here, the good folks at Minute Physics did as their namesake implies: they explained it to us in a pair of 2-minute videos that (should) make it easier to comprehend.

First, let’s look at the special theory of relativity:

Now for the fun part – understanding E=MC2:
